It’s the only palm species native to continental Europe. The palm-shaped leaves are dark green with a long petiole of up to 1 m length with abundant thorns. It’s a slow growing plant, usually developing side trunks. The inflorescence is a yellow panicle; fruits are bright green, turning to dull yellow or brown when ripe.
