About Us

Description

In 1984 two Italian brothers and one Colombian started La Gaitana Farms with 4 hectares of greenhouses. The Bleier family bought a minority share in 1986. There was not enough water available, the cuttings came from Europe at a high price and all production was going to one customer in Miami on consignment. Fusarium had already appeared on the plants to make the situation harder.

Step by step the company grew to its current size to become one of the main growers of carnations and mini carnations in Colombia.

In 1993 and again in 2003 additional pieces of land were bought, to meet market demand. Today there is still land available for additional expansion.

A state-of-the-art post harvesting facility was built in 2005 with an area of 2,300 square meters; the walls are isolated panels, to guarantee a temperature of 15 degrees Celsius year round. In 2013 a processing plant was built to recycle the hydroponic substrate used in growing carnations.
