Oral clomiphene citrate, sold under the brand name Clomid, is a medicine used to increase the frequency or encourage ovulation. Your GP or gynecologist may prescribe Clomid if you have been unable to conceive naturally and have been diagnosed with ovulatory dysfunction and/or polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS). Clomid is produced by Sanofi-Aventis US LLC, a pharmaceutical company established in 1950 with headquarters in Bridgewater, New Jersey. Each oral tablet contains 50 mg of clomiphene citrate USP along with a number of other inactive ingredients, including lactose, sucrose, cornstarch, and magnesium stearate.

By causing ovulation, Clomid increases the likelihood of becoming pregnant. It works by tricking the brain into believing that estrogen levels are lower than they actually are, which causes the pituitary gland to begin producing more follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). A single or many egg follicles, which will mature and be released during the process of ovulation, are stimulated by higher levels of FSH in the ovary. A sperm has greater chances to reach an egg when there are more eggs released from the ovaries as a result of ovulation being stimulated by high levels of LH.
