But, why do we use PET for packaging?
Let’s start at the beginning. PET stands for Polyethylene Terephthalate, which is a strong synthetic fiber and resin. As a member of the polyester polymer family, PET preforms can be blow-moulded to make bottles and jars, spun into fabric, and extruded into photographic film. As far as plastics go, PET is kind of a jack of all trades.
PET bottles are very strong, colorless and lightweight. PET is transparent and it allows the content of the container to remain visible. The strength and lightweight of PET is very important for liquids such as carbonated beverages since it makes the bottles safe for on-the-go or sports use. With its excellent material properties, It is one of the most suitable materials for the packaging of natural mineral and spring water.
Some of its most important properties include its resistance to water, its high strength to weight ratio and the fact that it is virtually shatterproof.
Hygienic and resistant to microbial attacks.
Non-toxic and non-reactive to food and drinks.
Built in moisture barrier.
Not biodegradable. Will not break down in storage.
Strong and lightweight, making it easy to transport.
Resealable.
Certainly, there will always be a need for glass, but for many industrial and consumer markets, PET is becoming the material of choice.
