It all started in 1969 when Hisham (Bob) started a specialized export house to cater for the demands of International Clients for fine British Worsted Pure new Wool Fabrics sourced from some of the finest weavers in the famous Yorkshire town of Huddersfield. Our first offices were on the first floor of 21 Victoria Street in the centre of Nottingham. Although we were without a High street front some of the Nottingham crowd of designers and fashion seamstresses managed to discover us as they stumbled on a quantity of super fine worsted suiting fabric lying in our office due to a cancelled export order. The fabric had a beautifully woven selvage with the writing - Made in England . Instant purchases were made, and the word got round as more and more customers came to our office from far away.
Later in 1969, the demand was so great for our fabrics, we decided to open a shop and warehouse at no 10 Fletcher Gate in the heart of the Nottinghams famous Lace Market. You could feel the air of colour, texture and excitement generated by the buzz of the coming and going of young designers from the local Art College. One unknown designer at the time, who frequented our shop was none other than Paul Smith (now Sir Paul Smith) who opened a shop only a few yards away in Bayard Lane in 1970. Paul frequently wandered around our shop/warehouse as he looked for pure cotton shirt fabrics imported by us from Italy and Germany in colour woven stripes and checks.
As the client list grew, it seemed a natural progression to take the business forward.
In February 1972, we took over a two floor department store, in Beeston (a suburb of Nottingham near Nottingham University) to house and show the now hugely expanded range of fabrics sourced from all over the World. We evolved into a mixed fabric wholesale and retail vehicle thus providing our customers with a one stop house.
We helped small manufacturers and designers by catering to their immediate requirements without imposing minimums, as is usual with larger suppliers, so they had us on their list of best kept secrets.
In 1990, I got married and my wife joined me as a partner in the business. In 1994, to the delight of our customers, furnishing and upholstery fabrics were added to the range. The move proved to be a huge success. We went on to include branded fabrics from Villa Nova, Chess Designs, Bill Beaumont, Prestigious, Fryettes, Voyage Decorations and many more.
In 2005, we set up a shop within eBay (vintagecookie1000), which proved to be a huge success. We shipped to the 5 continents. Many of our customers, even the ones living close by, asked us to set up a website to facilitate their purchases and to be able to see the wider range. This led us to open our first web site as we felt the time was right to provide an on-line service with a secure site so that customers may choose at their leisure from our now extensive range of fabrics.
By constantly listing new fabrics on our website with regular updates and combining this with a friendly, individual and professional service to our customer, we believe we created a unique enterprise relieving the stress (not to mention the cost) placed upon the customer by having to make numerous frustrating phone calls without getting very far. Our flexible and individual approach to working with our clients has proved to be our trademark, something that we take great pride in and strive to improve.
Our motto is - If we dont have it we will find it for you - or advise you further on how to find it yourself. Contact us today to see how we can help you with your requirements. We will go to any length for you at myfabricplace.com.
