With its dramatic city walls jutting out into the Adriatic, Dubrovnik is a small coastal city with a long and proud history of independence. It comprises two areas, the picture-postcard Old Town and the surrounding areas along the coast and in the steep hilly area behind.
Most visitors head from the gates which enclose the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with daytrippers from the cruise ships. Inside it is rich in architectural delights including palaces, museums, churches and public buildings. The central street is Stradun, a stone-paved thoroughfare connecting Pile gate at one end and the Sponza Palace and Bell Tower at the other, with numerous alleyways in between.
Undoubtedly one of the world's great cities, France's capital has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of sights and attractions, from the iconic Eiffel Tower and world-famous Louvre to the dramatically Gothic Notre Dame and the swanky shops and cafes of the Champs-Elysees.
An amble within a 0.8kmradius of the central hub of the Place de la Concorde with its fountains and 3,000-year-old obelisk offers monuments, museums, grand boulevards, formal gardens such as the Tuileries, superb 18th-century colonnaded mansions and a plethora of cafe terraces where one can sit and watch the world go by.
A unique, colourful capital and major port with a lively, multicultural mix, Amsterdam offers a range of experiences, whether you visit for the fine 17th- and 18th-century architecture, the wealth of museums and galleries, or the well-known tolerance of its 700,000 or so citizens. It was formed out of marshland in the early 13th century, when the area around the river Amstel was dammed (so giving the city its name).
By the 17th century, it had grown to be a centre of commercial and naval power, headquarters of the Dutch East India and West India companies, and Europe's richest city. It was during this "Golden Age" that the semicircle of concentric canals fanning out from Centraal Station were constructed along with the elegant merchants' houses that line them; an ancient tax on the width of buildings explains their tall, narrow construction – some even slant forward to allow furniture to be hoisted up.
Cancun attracts more visitors than any other region in Mexico. More than three million people visit annually for the fantastic climate and amenities.
In the 1960s, the Mexican government saw the potential for the mother of all resort regions on the white-sand beaches off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula. Now Cancun is synonymous with Spring Break, but it is much more than a party town. The main beach at Cancun is really a barrier island shaped like a number 7. Running down the east side of this magnificent beach are shops, restaurants, malls, clubs, and huge Maya-inspired hotels.
For a quieter holiday, try the Mexican Riviera, which extends south of Cancun to more traditional, historical, and natural areas like Isla Mujeres, the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, and the island of Cozumel.
The average temperature in Cancun is 80°F with more than 240 days of sunshine. Rain is rare, with late August through November being the rainy season.
Peak season:
The best time to take a flight to Cancun is between December to April.
Shoulder season:
Late April and May are good times to snap up a bargain. Temperatures are in the upper 80s and Cancun gets humid, but the breezes off the Caribbean should keep it manageable.
Low season:
Between June and November the weather in Cancun is hot and humid, while the fall is hurricane season.
