Diflucan is an antifungal that is taken orally. Both a pill and an oral suspension are available. Fluconazole, a member of the triazole antifungal agent medication class, is the primary component of Diflucan. It shares a connection with itraconazole, clotrimazole, miconazole (Lotrimin), and ketoconazole (Nizoral) (Sporanox).

By stopping the development of membranes around fungus cells, fluconazole stops the growth of fungi. It is effective against Candida fungal infections in all areas of the body, including the vaginal region, blood, throat, lungs, and mouth. Fluconazole is frequently used to treat vaginal thrush, a yeast infection brought on by an overgrowth of the Candida yeast. Diflucan is also used as prophylaxis (disease prevention) for people whose immune systems have been compromised by chemotherapy, bone marrow transplants, and immune-system-related illnesses including AIDS. As their immune systems are unable to combat disease-causing microorganisms, these people are vulnerable to internal fungal infections. Internal fungal infections can be dangerous, hence prophylaxis with antifungal medications like Diflucan is required.
